A papal document attests to the affiliation of the ancient historic church with the Pomposa Abbey in Comacchio: it is, therefore, one of the oldest churches in Modena. 

It was built by order of Abbot Ludovico Muratori. The façade still shows the traces of the medieval arched doorway. 

Inside the church, the single nave has a series of paintings from the 1600's and 1700's depicting the life of St. Sebastian.
