The museum is installed in an interesting building complex composed of a 13th century tower house, a 16th century church and a 14th century core.
The museum was created in 1992 to care for the cathedral's late medieval liturgical decorations and the paintings and sculptures of the cathedral collection which had been removed from their original locations and placed in depositories and in the cathedral sacristy.
The exhibit also includes the important nucleus of silverwork created in Lucca in the 15th and 16th centuries.

From 15 March to 2 November everyday 10-18; from 3 November to 14 March: Monday to Friday 10-14; Saturday and Sunday 10-18. From December 22 to January 6: Monday to Sunday 10-18. On January 1: 13-18. Closed: December 25 and January 1st (morning).
