In Genoa, if you walk upwards you go towards the future. Downwards, you proceed towards the past. And the past here is really far away. It all started centuries before Jesus Christ when people walking out of Rome, along the Ligurian coast, started camping in a beautiful gulf, surrounded by protecting hills. From the small, original campsite, a city was born, with her narrow streets, proud towers, busy piers. Genoese started becoming rich and powerful, conquering the world of the time and leaving traces which can be found till today. This led to the building of magnificent palaces, designed to display - but not too much! - the might of the ruling families.
