From the tip of the small wooded peninsula of Lavedo, which juts out over the waters of the center of Lake Como, the Villa elegantly overlooks a sweeping panorama that makes it one of the most scenic residences on the lake. The initiator of the wonders of the Balbianello was Cardinal Durini, a scholar and patron, who at the end of the 18th century chose this lakeside spot to make it a retreat for pleasure and literary pursuits. This vocation was revived in modern times by Guido Monzino, an entrepreneur, collector, and avid traveler, who in 1974 made the Villa his retreat, where he kept, with order and taste, the memories of an adventurous life that led him to be the first Italian to reach the summit of Everest. His everyday life and successful exploits are revealed through maps, travel equipment, books, furnishings, and precious and curious collections of ancient and primitive art: everything is still arranged as he wanted, including the memorabilia from his famous mountaineering feats, which are kept in the fascinating Expeditions Museum. In 1988, at his request, the Foundation took over the meticulous management of the Villa, preserving its spirit, which also lives on in the stunning garden that the FAI maintains with the same obsessive perfection. A path that ranges from bold pruning and romantic views, avenues lined with statues, panoramic terraces and abundant blooms, culminating in the 18th-century Loggia that crowns the entire complex, offering a twofold and lofty panorama. The beauty and wonder of the Balbianello, which can also be accessed by lake, have been the key factor that has prompted many Hollywood filmmakers to set famous sagas here, such as Star Wars and 007. You can also purchase the Villa del Balbianello + Velarca combo tour. The tour includes a guided visit for the entire itinerary, lasting approximately 3 hours. Departure from the Villa del Balbianello with a tour of the interior and the garden, transfer to La Velarca by speedboat, tour of the historic boat, return to the Villa del Balbianello again by speedboat, and end of the visit.
