On this tour you will discover two authentic gems of UNESCO heritage. You will visit Matera, a spectacular place that is among the oldest cities in the world, and Alberobello to admire its unique trulli.
Explore two UNESCO World Heritage Sites on an unforgettable journey through the heart of southern Italy: Matera and Alberobello.
The tour begins in Matera, one of the most spectacular cities in Italy. It's incredible to think that less than 70 years ago, about 15,000 people, mostly farmers, still lived in caves without natural light, ventilation, running water or electricity. Today, Matera is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it was also the European Capital of Culture in 2019.
Explore the ancient Sassi districts, an intricate system of cave dwellings carved into the limestone rock, overlooking a deep ravine. Walking through alleys and stone staircases, you can admire artisan shops, cafes, cafes, and gelaterias nestled between the ancient tufa walls.
The journey then continues to Alberobello, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. The city is an extraordinary example of construction using prehistoric techniques that have survived intact and are still functional in the modern world.
A trullo is a small limestone house, built with dry stone walls and topped by a characteristic conical roof. The dazzling light reflected by the white walls of the trulli, the narrow streets that intertwine, and the souvenir shops, B&Bs, bars, and restaurants that enliven the village create a unique and fairytale atmosphere, making Alberobello a truly special place in the world.
During the trip, a tour leader will tell you interesting facts and details about Apulian culture and traditions, in Italian or English. They will guide you to the town center and provide you with all the tips you need to get the best start to your self-guided tour.
Return to Bari at 18:30/19:00, barring unforeseen circumstances.
